Logo NCTD National Clinicians HIV/AIDS Testing & Awareness Day

July 21, 2009 is the annual observance of National Clinicians HIV AIDS Testing and Awareness Day. This initiative, originally created by the National Minority AIDS Education and Training Center (link) was developed to bring awareness to clinicians and care providers about disparity in HIV/AIDS diagnosis, treatment and care often as a result of stigma and discrimination within our health care systems. As a result of this national focus, clinicians can become powerful advocates to promote testing. By setting an example, that is, getting tested themselves, clinicians can take a bold, decisive and powerful step towards reducing stigma and HIV/AIDS related disparities among ethnic minorities.

Review and download the latest HRSA core clinical performance measures for Ryan White Grantees

Group 3 measures represent areas of care that are considered "best practice," but may lack written clinical guidelines or rely on data that are difficult to collect. Each group of measures can be used by all programs funded by the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program either at the provider or system level.  Ryan White Grantees are encouraged to include the core clinical performance measures in their quality management plans.

Warmline

Free HIV Telephone Consultation Services for Providers 1-888-HIV-4911 (448-4911)

The Warmline (800-933-3413) is a free consultation service within the AETC Network for health care providers caring for HIV-infected patients and is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The Needlestick Hotline was developed in 1988 to provide immediate treatment to exposed health care workers at San Francisco General Hospital and has served as a model for similar programs elsewhere.

Health care workers are often exposed through occupational accidents to HIV or hepatitis and other blood borne diseases. Studies have found that prompt treatment after exposures can reduce the number of persons who actually become infected from these accidents. Now a new 24-hour emergency hotline for clinicians who need advice on treating patients who have suffered occupational exposures to blood has opened to help provide prompt and appropriate treatment. The free hotline is open seven days a week by calling 1-888-HIV-4911 (448-4911). This service is for health care providers only.
