Randy Allgaier Positive Voices Fund Launched
The Randy Allgaier Positive Voices Fund supports the inclusion of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) in CAEAR Coalition's federal public policy work through travel and accommodation subsidies to support participation in advocacy efforts in Washington, DC. The fund is hosted by the San Francisco-based AIDS Emergency Fund (AEF).
As Chair of CAEAR Coalition's PLHA Caucus and his many other roles, Randy was a passionate voice for the active inclusion of PLHA in all HIV/AIDS advocacy efforts. Randy understood the importance of PLHA meeting directly with elected and appointed leaders and their staffs to tell their stories and share their perspectives on decisions that could affect their lives so profoundly. He was also well aware of the impact that the limited financial means of many PLHA had on their ability to travel to Washington to participate in federal advocacy. The Positive Voices Fund will honor Randy's legacy by expanding the opportunities for PLHA to advocate for their lives in Washington, DC.
A longtime advocate for people living with HIV and LGBT equality, Randy was a member of CAEAR Coalition for seven years and served on our Board of Directors as the Chair of the People Living with HIV/AIDS Caucus since 2008. At the time of his death in November 2010, he was Director of the San Francisco HIV Health Services Planning Council, of which he had previously served as Co-chair. Earlier in his career, he was the state advocate for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, where he took a leading role in building a statewide coalition that successfully advocated for significant increases for California's AIDS Drug Assistance Program. He was also very active in the areas of HIV and Medicare/Medicaid and served on the Board of Directors of National Positive Working Coalition. As an animal lover, one of his proudest achievements was his service as President of the Board of Pets are Wonderful Support (PAWS) in San Francisco. He was also a founder of the state-wide LGBT advocacy organization Equality California and served on the Board of Directors of the Human Rights Campaign. To all of these endeavors he brought his signature passion, creativity, and diligence to the work at hand.
